In this 365-chapter, 1,000+ page novel, French literary great Victor Hugo describes the misery, love and ultimately redemption of ex-convict Jean Valjean. Valjean represents the best of humanity, a man who serves 19 hard years in prison for a theft driven by economic hardship yet continues to give back to the society that wronged him. As the narrative follows Valjean from embittered social outcast to honorable man, many other characters are introduced at varying levels of complexity, highlighting the consequences of social injustice and illustrating a range of human feelings including love, loneliness, and honor. WHAT’S THE STORY BEHIND IT? Hugo wrote Les Miserables amid the injustices of nineteenth-century France, and unlike much of the literature of his time, Les Miserables was not written exclusively for the literate elite but instead describes the plights and possibilities for working-class society. Jean Valjean’s specific crime is based on a similar incident Hugo witnessed on the streets of Paris, when an impoverished man was arrested for stealing b. Even as Hugo provides a critique upon the society that subjects his characters to such misery and injustice, he also shows how they are able to transcend their societal constraints with the help of love and compassion. WHAT’S SO AWESOME ABOUT IT? Les Mis has too many characters for ers not to love at least one, and for me this character is Eponine, the daughter of criminals who reaches adolescence in rags after a pampered childhood. Although Eponine comes from a morally bereft family, she ends up making tremendous personal sacrifices to do the right thing, and her tragic story of unrequited love invites compassion despite her shady background. Such complex characters make this novel memorable and give it a real human element, making their miserable circumstances that much more compelling.《悲惨世界》塑造了太多生动的人物,让人不得不爱。 THIS IS GREAT TO READ WHEN… This is a great book for when you have a lot of time, as you will need a lot of ing hours to get into this work of classic literature – it was certainly not written for a generation accustomed to 6-second Vines and 140-character Tweets – and a lot more time once you’ve found yourself emotionally invested in the characters to their full fates. It’s probably also best to alone for when you start to tear up, which will likely happen a few times during this 1,500-page rollercoaster of emotions. I personally this while I was studying in France – it kept me entertained every night at an otherwise-isolated university, and really helped me appreciate my surroundings. IF YOU LIKED THIS, THEN YOU SHOULD TRY… For starters, you should definitely try the recent film adaptation starring Hugh Jackman and Russell Crowe (if you haven’t aly), or the musical that the script was based on. For more literary enjoyment, check out The Hunchback of Notre Dame, another Hugo bestseller with similarly complex characters. The hunchback, like Eponine, is not a physically attractive character, and as in Les Mis there are no clear heroes and villains but rather those who succumb to their dire circumstances and those who are able to rise above those challenges. And if you enjoy the long French novel, be sure to check out The Count of Monte Cristo by fellow French literary great Alexandre Dumas – it is also well over 1,000 pages although probably still a couple hundred pages short of Les Mis. /201506/384015Where you gain weight isn#39;t a game of chance. Turns out it#39;s all in your genes. If you#39;ve ever a women#39;s magazine, you#39;re familiar with the concept of ;apple; versus ;pear; body s hapes. They#39;re the two most common presentations of the human body amp;; in the first case, fat gatl around the midsection, in the latter, fat accumulates around the hips, thighs, and rear. Now, researchers from Duke University have pinpointed a gene, called Plexin Dl, which determines the bod y type you#39;ll have with a great deal more certainty than any magazine quiz ever could. Now, for those who think that your body shape is only a barometer of the style of jeans you choose, or if you should opt for the A-line vs. the empire waist wedding dress, take heed: Your body shape has everything to do with your health. An apple shaped body, which has greater fat accumulation in the belly, carries with it the risk of heart disease. Fat concentration in the midsection is also thought to induce inflammation and trigger metabolic diseases including high blood pressure, stroke and diabetes. A pear body shape, on the other hand, is considered to be pretty healthy. This shape accumulates fat in the hips and thighs, which is associated with increased fertility and a decreased risk of metabolic diseases like diabetes. Now let#39;s get back to that study. All humans have the Plexin D1 gene. But to simplify their research, the Duke researchers chose to study the gene#39;s effects in zebrafish. Since the fish are transparent, you can actually see where the fat cells are accumulating to easily determine their body shape. John F. Rawls, PhD, and an associate professor of molecular genetics and microbiology at Duke, and James E. Minchin, PhD, a post-doctoral fellow in Rawls#39; lab, engineered zebrafish without the Plexin D1 gene, and compared them with normal zebrafish who carried the gene. The fish without the Plexin D1 gene had less visceral fat tissue than their ;apple-shaped; counterparts with the gene. Visceral fat is the type of fat that causes an apple-shaped body. It lies deep within the midsection, wedged between organs including the heart, liver, intestine, and lungs. From there, the tissue emits hormones and other chemicals that cause inflammation, triggering high blood pressure, heart attack, stroke, and diabetes. Instead, these ;pear shaped; fish displayed more subcutaneous fat, which is the type of fat that sits be neath the skin of the hips, thighs, and rear of pear-shaped individuals. This type of fat tissue decrease s insulin resistance in humans 8i; which protects us from getting diabetes. So should we all try to get rid of our Plexin D1 gene? Not so fast. Michin tells Yahoo Health, that whil e ;to have such an extreme effect is surprising,; it#39;s important to remember that their research also inv olved an extreme amount of genetic manipulation, wholly eliminating the Plexin D1 gene in the mutant zet a fish in a way that is unlikely to ever occur in real life. All humans carry the Plexin D1 gene, but we express the gene in different ways. ;Body fat distribution is a complex trait that is governed by interactions between multiple genes, says Michin. ;We expect that more subtle regulation of Plexin D1 in human populations is likely to occur.;所有人都携带着丛状蛋白D1基因,但是,让我们以另一种方式描述这种基因,;身体脂肪的分配是十分复杂的,是多种基因互相影响的结果,;Michin说,;我们猜想,丛状蛋白D1基因在人体内可能存在其他效应。;Despite the clear health implications of body fat distribution, little is known about the genetics of body shape. A large international study that appeared in Nature in February began to fill in this gap by looking for genes associated with waist-to-hip ratio. The researchers found some association with Plexin D1 in their study. In the future, this information could lead to understanding how to genetically manipulate our body types — and, more importantly, improve our health in the process.

With a final blast of flaming gas, and just as the sun rises over the snow-powdered mountains to the east, we begin to float upwards. The inaugural flight of the world’s highest commercial hot-air balloon service is under way. On the ground, our team of young helpers whoop with excitement. For the next hour we drift down Bhutan’s majestic Phobjikha Valley, savouring a bird’s-eye view of the Himalayan scenery unfolding around us. To the north, the 400-year-old Gangtey Goenpa monastery stands on a ridge, dominating the valley. On each side the valley’s forested flanks — home to leopards, bears and boar — rise steeply to the skyline. Below, the Nakey Chhu river meanders like a silver ribbon through pastures and water meadows. As the sun burns away the mist, we drift silently above thickets of colourful prayer flags, gold-roofed temples and white-walled Bhutanese farmhouses with ornate wooden eaves and windows. We glide southwards over horses, cattle, the odd yak and a pack of dogs that bark furiously as the huge red translucent globe passes above them. Early-rising schoolchildren stare at the apparition in the sky. A peasant farmer stands in a field and watches — one presumes in amazement — a sight the likes of which he would never have seen before. A narrowing of the valley funnels the breeze. Soon we are travelling at four or five knots, but so smoothly it seems that the ground, not the balloon, is moving. Our pick-up truck has been left far behind, bumping along a dirt track. Our young helpers, dressed in a traditional Bhutanese ghos, are splashing through bogs, laughing and shouting as they struggle to keep up. Finally Cary Crawley, a professional balloon pilot from England, lands us on a meadow sandwiched between the river and a tilled field, the wicker basket bumping three times along the frosty grass before it comes to rest on its side. It was a short, experimental flight, but the six passengers are exhilarated — even the two civil aviation officials “inspecting” a means of transport they know absolutely nothing about. “Unbelievable!” cries my daughter Hannah. Khin Omar Win, one of the trip’s organisers, beams and asks rhetorically: “How exciting was that?” 本次旅程的组织者Khin Omar Win也是笑容满面,反问道:“真有那么爽吗?”“I told you we’d do it — and we did,” Win’s husband, Brett Melzer, declares triumphantly. The Melzers have good reason to be elated, for the flight is the culmination of a 10-year venture — or gamble — that can only be described as quixotic.“我对你说过能行————我们成功了,”Khin Omar Win的丈夫布雷特#8226;梅尔策(Brett Melzer)得意地说道。 Win was born in Myanmar but raised in London. In 1997 she met Melzer, then a footloose Australian, in Yangon, and left the UN Development Programme to help him pioneer balloon rides over the famous Bagan temple complex. As “Balloons over Bagan” grew, they branched out, opening Malikha Lodge, a luxury retreat in the jungle of northern Myanmar that was accessible only by air. But in 2009 flights were suspended and they were forced to sell the lodge to a Burmese businessman with close links to the military regime. Undaunted, the Melzers resurrected an idea they had begun work on in 2004: ballooning over Bhutan, another exotic, little-known country that was beginning to open up to the world. At their behest, Crawley spent six weeks scouring the tiny, crumpled kingdom of soaring mountains and plunging valleys created when the Indian subcontinent collided with Eurasia. A balloon could not take off or be retrieved on the rocky plateaux and snowfields of Bhutan’s highest peaks, or in its dense southern jungles. Phobjikha, at almost 3,000 metres above sea level, was the only valley wide and open enough. There were still problems. It was on the outer edge of the tourist circuit — a six-hour drive along the “national highway”, a twisting one-lane ribbon of crumbling tarmac, from Bhutan’s only international airport. The valley is also the winter home of hundreds of thrung thrung karmo — black-necked cranes with six-foot wingspans and flamboyant mating dances — so the balloon cannot fly until those endangered birds have returned to the Tibetan plateau each spring. But Phobjikha was, Crawley says, “the only realistic choice”. The Melzers initially envisaged building a modest guest house for their ballooning clients but ended up creating a spectacular m 12-suite boutique hotel in this most improbable of locations. Gangtey Goenpa Lodge opened in 2013 and stands on the same ridge as the monastery, unsignposted and accessible only by a dirt track. From the outside, it resembles two Bhutanese farmhouses connected by a low barn. Inside, however, floor-to-ceiling windows offer sublime views of the cloud-wreathed valley below. The wood and stone is local, but the wood-burning stoves that heat each room come from Switzerland, the fancy bathtubs from the UK, and the fabrics from Australia — all shipped to Kolkata and trucked overland, along with the 0,000 balloon, which was made in Bristol, southwest England. Sara Rezgui, the Scandinavian chef, performs marvels with fish and meat imported from India because the Buddhist Bhutanese will not kill animals. Most of the 45 staff, even the masseurs, are villagers trained from scratch and delightfully eager to please. Because the aviation inspectors arrived late, Hannah and I had to spend more days than we bargained for in this luxurious retreat, which was certainly no hardship. It also gave us more time to explore a valley rich in unexpected delights. We watched maroon-robed boy monks hurling foot-long homemade darts at a distant target in a game called kuru. We watched two villages compete with astounding skill at the national sport of archery. Dressed in ghos and using bamboo bows, the archers regularly hit a small wooden post 140 metres away, prompting celebratory dances and songs from their teammates. Save for a single rifle shooter, Bhutan has sent only archers to the Olympics, but has never won a medal because Olympic targets are only half that distance. We explored the courtyards and temples of the ancient monastery as monks performed rituals with horns, drums and a mournful pipe called a kangling, made from human thigh bones. “We dig them up at night or import them from Nepal,” one official replied without a trace of embarrassment when I asked where the bones came from. An elite set of young monks known as tulkus explained to us how they had been identified in infancy as reincarnated Buddhist masters. We visited (but could not enter) a meditation centre ringed by a barbed-wire fence where older monks live incommunicado in single cells for three years, three months and three days, eating food left for them outside the building. There was one other place we could not enter: a chamber deep within the monastery containing a mummified “yeti”. There is certainly something there, though it is more likely the corpse of a deformed child. Italian mountaineer Reinhold Messner saw it in 1991. “Nailed to the wall by the back of its scalp was the hide of a ‘red yeti’,” he wrote later. “I was trembling with excitement. Bones were still attached to the relic’s hands and legs, and from its head, which was largely bald, hung a long, black hank of hair.” Legends and superstitions abound in these parts. The cranes, we were told, circle the monastery three times clockwise when they arrive each winter. Homes are adorned with murals of tigers, snow lions, dragons and mythical serpent-eating garudas, and of giant, erect, sperm-trailing phalluses (commemorating the “Divine Madman”, a 15th-century saint known for unorthodox teaching and sexual encounters). Doorways have raised thresholds to stop the stiff-limbed dead from entering. We hiked through fragrant pine forests where rhododendrons were bursting into flower. We cycled to a hilltop at the far end of the eight-mile valley, where the lodge had prepared a picnic lunch served on a table laid with linen, glass and china. We encountered a village woman shearing a squirming black sheep, a young shepherdess guarding her flock from leopards and foxes, and a yak herder driving his animals up to the higher pastures for the summer. One night we forsook the lodge for a peasant family’s home — helping them milk cows and churn butter, sharing their rice, potatoes and arra (rice wine) as we sat cross-legged around their stove, playing grandmother’s footsteps with their four enchanting children. But the valley is changing fast. Electricity, TV and mobile phones have all arrived — though not yet the internet. The “national highway” from the capital Thimphu is being upgraded to two lanes. The peasants have discovered that potatoes are a lucrative cash crop, so they no longer live semi-nomadic lives and are building new homes with roofs of steel not wooden shingles. Bhutan, a land sealed off from the world until the 1970s, is now joining it. The much-loved monarchy has surrendered power, volunteering democracy to a population with no experience of it. The young are migrating from the villages to Thimphu. Foreign visitor numbers rose from 23,480 in 2009 to 116,209 in 2013, and new luxury hotels are proliferating. In the face of such change, Bhutan is struggling to preserve its character and pristine environment — national dress is compulsory in schools and government buildings; the constitution requires 60 per cent of the country to be forested; tobacco and plastic bags are banned, and Tuesdays are dry. Mountaineering is restricted because it angers the deities who live on the snowy summits — at 7,570 metres Gangkhar Puensum is the world’s highest unclimbed mountain. Bhutan wants tourists, but not the mass tourism that so often destroys the very attractions it feeds off, so visitors are obliged to spend at least 0 a day. To date its efforts are largely succeeding. Its spectacular dzongs (fortresses) and monasteries are not yet overrun nor ringed by tacky souvenir shops. Its many festivals and masked dances are still staged primarily for locals, and have not morphed into commercial shows for foreigners. Buddhism still dominates Bhutan’s way of life, and its people still seem driven more by their legendary pursuit of happiness than money. In a curious way the Melzers’ project supports the government’s goals. The 30-metre-high balloon makes a magnificent sight as it drifts silently down the Phobjikha Valley, enhancing not marring the natural beauty. The occupants of its wicker basket survey the valley without intruding on it. As befits a country known as Druk Yul, or “Land of the Thunder Dragon”, the balloon is emblazoned with huge golden dragons, and the occasional blasts of flame from its gas cylinders resemble nothing so much as a dragon’s fiery breath. Just as they greet the cranes each year, the monks appear to welcome this foreign body in their ancient domain. One senior teacher, Chogyal Zangpo, blessed the balloon before joining its second flight, and again after landing. “I’ve had a wonderful experience,” he said. “I’ve never been in the air before and I’ll remember it all my life. I often watch the birds flying above, so now I know what they see.” Martin Fletcher was a guest of The Ultimate Travel Company, which offers a 13-day “Bhutan Journey”, with four nights at Gangtey Goenpa Lodge, from #163;6,675 per person, including ballooning, private transfers, guides and all meals. Rowling Was Awarded an OBE by the Her Royal Highness Queen Elizabeth II for Her Contribution to Children#39;s Literature7.J.K. In 2001, Rowling received an award called the Order of the British Empire, or OBE, from Prince Charles, the Prince of Wales. The Prince told her that he was a huge fan of the Harry Potter novels, and that he would like to know more about the movie version of “Harry Potter and the Philosopher#39;s Stone.” A teaser trailer had just been released for the first film.2001年,罗琳从威尔士亲王——查尔斯王子(Prince Charles)处领取到大英帝国勋章。 An OBE is one of the most popular honors given out by the British monarchy. There are currently five classes of the order stemming from knighthood down to an ordinary member of the British Empire. These honors are given out twice a year by the Queen as a way of marking civilian achievement. Rowling received what is called a “post-nominal” meaning, and she can sign her name as Joanne Rowling, OBE. (Joanne Rowling)。Several prominent authors have turn down the honor from the queen. CS Lewis, Roald Dahl and Aldous Huxley have all declined the award of the Order of the British Empire. J.G. Ballard turned down his nomination for a CBE from the Queen with a statement deploring those of a left wing persuasion who would accept and honor and kneel down in front of the Queen. Other figures who have turned down great honors from the palace include T.E. Lawrence (popularly known as Lawrence of Arabia), David Bowie, John Cleese (performer, known best for Monty Python), Francis Crick (who helped to discover DNA), and Nigella Lawson (chef and TV personality). 6.J.K. Rowling Is a Former Billionaire6.J.K. J.K. Rowling was a billionaire until 2012 when a combination of charitable giving and high taxes removed her from the list. Rowling has invested and donated her money to a wide variety of both personal and global causes. In October 2013, the Anne Rowling Regenerative Neurology Clinic at the University of Edinburgh opened with a 10 million pound donation from J.K. Rowling, whose mother suffered from a neurodegenerative disease and died at age 45. Rowling also started a charity, which she called Lumos, a reference to her famous novels. Lumos works to prevent the systematic institutionalization of children through Europe and tries to find them caring homes. She donated all of the auction proceeds, .95 million, of a special edition of her book “The Tales of Beetle the Bard” to Lumos, and the following year, the book was published widely with part of the proceeds also benefiting Lumos. She also has a charitable trust called Volant which works to fight social deprivation with a focus on women and children.J.K. Rowling is also involved with many other philanthropic missions regarding supporting single parents and helping to relieve social deprivation. She is also active with Doctors without Borders, Maggie#39;s Centres for Cancer Care, Amnesty International, for whom she worked before she became an author, MS Society Scotland and Comic Relief. In 2011 alone, she gave away about 16 percent of her net worth, or near 0 million dollars. When asked about her money, Rowling says that the ultimate luxury is that she will never again have to worry about providing food for her children, remembering the petty humiliations and hardship of her recent past. 5.J.K. Rowling Dreamed up the Idea for Harry Potter on a Train5.J.K. J.K. Rowling first had her idea for Harry Potter while on a delayed train service from Manchester to London in 1990. On this fateful journey, she was traveling back to London on a crowded car, and she describes the idea as simply falling into her head. She remembers being the most excited she had ever been, and then realizing that she did not have a pen to write down her ideas. She was too shy to ask to borrow a pen from any of the people on the crowded coach, and so she was forced to retreat to her imagination. This particular train took four long hours, instead of the usual two hours, and Rowling sat and day dreamed about the boy she would call Harry. In her memoirs, she wonders how much of her wild idea slipped away because she was unable to write, but mostly she believes that those four hours were some of the best ideas for the books because she was able to dream and imagine without interruption. As soon as she arrived home in London, she began to write a story about a boy with black hair and spectacles. Little did she know, this boy would someday become one of the most famous boys in the world. 4.Rowling Has Always Written under a Pen Name4. In fact, J.K. Rowling is not her real name. She was born Joanne Rowling, but adopted the #39;K#39;, her grandmother#39;s initial, at the advice of her publisher to help keep the book anonymous because they did not believe that a fantasy book about wizards would be accepted when written by a woman. Indeed, her first ever piece of fan mail was addressed to her as “Dear Sir.”She continues writing under pen names, and most recently she tried to publish her novel “The Cuckoo#39;s Calling” under the name Robert Galbraith. Almost immediately, the Internet cried out and knew that Robert Galbraith had to be Joanne Rowling. Rowling has written one other book under this pen name titled “The Silk Worm.” She chose this name by combining the name of her political hero, Robert F Kennedy and her childhood fantasy name, Ella Galbraith. Writing under this name was another attempt to make her work sound as though it was written by a man, and even the editor of the book believed that Robert Galbraith was man before the true author was revealed. This time, Rowling wanted to take her writing persona away from being J.K. Rowling, the creator of Harry Potter. Rowling was revealed to the press by a friend of one her lawyers, but not before Robert Galbraith sold 8,500 copies of the books and received two offers from television production companies. Rowling notes that Galbraith#39;s initial success, before being outed, was similar to her own at the very beginning of her career. But, sales were not what mattered to Rowling, and as she said after her identity was revealed, if all she wanted to do was sell books she would have used her own name from the start.

However, the biggest issue with the sea lions is the rate at which they are consuming salmon. In addition to hurting local fisheries it could decimate the area#39;s fish population if not stopped in time. To persuade the unwelcome guests to leave, port officials have removed a few docks and strung brightly colored surveying tape to stop them from leaping onto the two that still have boats tied to them. Unfortunately, the mats that have been effective in scaring sea lions perched on ocean oil rigs did not work as well here. Astoria port officials are preparing to try a new low-tech technique - introducing a fake fiberglass ;Willy; to scare the sea lions away. In 1996, a similar one was anchored in the waters of Puget Sound to scare the sea lions that were devouring the aly dwindling supply of steelhead at Seattle#39;s Ballard Locks fish ladder. However, the wily animals were smart enough to realize that the fiberglass structure was an impersonator and refused to budge. Will a slightly more sophisticated version - one that moves and sings like the real whale be more effective? Astoria#39;s officials and the fishermen and boat owners that reside in the region, sure hope so!
