2 Down the coast of Africa第2章 南下非洲海岸For two long years I lived the life of a slave. I worked in escape, but it was never possible. I thought about it day and night. My master liked to go fishing in a little boat, and he al-ways took me with him. A man called Moely, and a young boy also went with us. One day my master said to us,#39;Some of my friends want to go fishing tomorrow. Get the boat y. So we put a lot of food and drink on the boat, and the next morning,we waited for my master and his friends. But when my master arrived,he was alone. #39;My friends don#39;t want to go fishing today,#39;he said to me. #39;But you go with Moely and the boy,and catch some fish for our supper tonight. #39;Yes,master,#39;I answered quietly, but inside I was excited. #39;Perhaps now I can escape,#39;I said to myself.“是,主人。” My master went back to his friends and we took the boat out to sea. For a time we fished quietly, and then I moved carefully behind Moely and knocked him into the water. #39;Swim!#39;I cried. #39;Swim to the shore!#39;“游回去,”我大声喊着“朝岸上游!”My master liked to shoot seabirds and so there were guns on the boat. Quickly,I took one of these guns. Moely was swim-ming after the boat and I shouted to him:我迅速地抓过一,莫雷正跟在船后面游,我朝他叫道:Go back to the shore! You can swim there—it#39;s not too far.“回到岸上去!你可以游到那儿,这儿离海岸不太远。I won#39;t hurt you,but if you come near the boat,I#39;ll shoot you through the head!我不会伤害你,但如果你一靠近这只船,我就会打穿你的睑袋!”#39;So Moely turned, and swam back to the shore as quickly as he could. Then I said to the boy,#39;Xury,if you help me,I#39;ll be a good friend to you. If you don#39;t help me,I#39;ll push you into the sea too. #39;如果你不帮我,我同样会把你丢到海里去。”But Xury was happy to help me. #39;I#39;ll go all over the world with you,#39;he cried. I wanted to sail to the Canary Islands, but I was afraid to go too far from the shore. It was only a small boat. And so we sailed on south for some days. We had very little water, and it was dangerous country here, with many wild animals. We were afraid, but we often had to go on shore to get more water. Once I used a gun to shoot a wild animal. I don#39;t know what animal it was,but it made a good meal. For about ten or twelve days we sailed on south, down the coast of Africa. Then one day we saw some people on the shore—strange, wild people, who did not look friendly. By now we had very little food, and We really needed help. we were afraid, but we had to go on shore. At first, they were afraid of us,too. Perhaps white people never visited this coast. We did not speak their language,of course,so we used our hands and faces to show that we were hungry. They came with food for us,but then they moved away quickly. We carried the food to our boat, and they watched us. I tried to thank them, but I had nothing to give them. Just then two big wild cats came down to the shore from the mountains. I think they were leopards. The people were afraid of these wild cats, and the women cried out. I took a gun,and shot one of the animals. The second wild cat ran back up into the mountains. Guns were new to these African people, and they were afraid of the loud noise and the smoke. But they were happy about the dead wild cat. I gave them the meat of the dead animal, and they gave us more food and water. We now had a lot of food and water, and we sailed on. Eleven days later we came near the Cape Verde Islands.11天后我们接近佛得角群岛。We could see them, but we couldn#39;t get near because there was no wind. We waited. Suddenly Xury called to me,#39;Look,a ship!#39;突然,苏里对我叫着,“看哪,一只船!”He was right! We called and shouted and sailed our little boat as fast as we could. But the ship did not see us. Then I re-membered the guns which made a lot of smoke. A few minutes later the ship saw us and turned. When we were on the ship, the Portuguese captain listened to my story. He was going to Brazil and agreed to help me,but he wanted nothing for his help. #39;No,#39;he said, when I tried to pay him. #39;Perhaps,one day, someone will help me when I need it. But he gave me money for my boat, and for Xury, too. At first,I did not want to sell Xury as a slave, after all our danger-ous adventures together. But Xury was happy to go to the cap-tain,and the captain was a good man. #39;In ten years#39;time,#39;he said,#39;Xury can go free. When we arrived in Brazil three weeks later,三星期后我们抵达巴西,I said goodbye to the captain and Xury, left the ship, and went to begin a new life. Elizabeth related to Jane the next day what had passed between Mr. Wickham and herself. Jane listened with astonishment and concern; she knew not how to believe that Mr. Darcy could be so unworthy of Mr. Bingley#39;s regard; and yet, it was not in her nature to question the veracity of a young man of such amiable appearance as Wickham. The possibility of his having endured such unkindness, was enough to interest all her tender feelings; and nothing remained therefore to be done, but to think well of them both, to defend the conduct of each, and throw into the account of accident or mistake whatever could not be otherwise explained.;They have both, ; said she, ;been deceived, I dare say, in some way or other, of which we can form no idea. Interested people have perhaps misrepresented each to the other. It is, in short, impossible for us to conjecture the causes or circumstances which may have alienated them, without actual blame on either side. ;;Very true, indeed; and now, my dear Jane, what have you got to say on behalf of the interested people who have probably been concerned in the business? Do clear THEM too, or we shall be obliged to think ill of somebody. ;;Laugh as much as you choose, but you will not laugh me out of my opinion. My dearest Lizzy, do but consider in what a disgraceful light it places Mr. Darcy, to be treating his father#39;s favourite in such a manner, one whom his father had promised to provide for. It is impossible. No man of common humanity, no man who had any value for his character, could be capable of it. Can his most intimate friends be so excessively deceived in him? Oh! no. ;;I can much more easily believe Mr. Bingley#39;s being imposed on, than that Mr. Wickham should invent such a history of himself as he gave me last night; names, facts, everything mentioned without ceremony. If it be not so, let Mr. Darcy contradict it. Besides, there was truth in his looks. ;;It is difficult indeed--it is distressing. One does not know what to think. ;;I beg your pardon; one knows exactly what to think. ;But Jane could think with certainty on only one point--that Mr. Bingley, if he HAD been imposed on, would have much to suffer when the affair became public. Article/201108/146924I’m not sure what to think about identity cards. There are good and bad things about them. I think on the whole they are a good thing. It depends on what the government uses the information for. It also depends on how secure the database is that keeps our information. A lot of people think ID cards are too much. They think the government is trying to control us too much. I’m not sure that’s true, but it is something to think about. In this day and age, when immigration is a problem, I think ID cards might be useful. Some countries are using ID cards as a one-stop card for everything. The card is your driving license, medical card and ID all rolled into one. That’s a great idea. All we need now is to make it a passport and credit card. Article/201105/136467襄阳襄州区妇幼保健院中医院检查妇科病怎么样

Broadcast: January 9, 2005(MUSIC)VOICE ONE:I’m Mary Tillotson.VOICE TWO:And I’m Steve Ember with the VOA Special English program, PEOPLE IN AMERICA. Today we tell about the Marx Brothers. They made many funny movies in the nineteen-thirties and nineteen-forties that are still popular today. (MUSIC)VOICE ONE:There were five Marx Brothers. The most famous were Julius, Leonard and Adolph. They were born in New York City between eighteen eighty-six and eighteen-ninety. Their father made clothing. Their mother wanted them to become performers. Julius, Leonard and Adolph started performing when they were children. Along with their two brothers, they performed in stage shows called vaudeville in New York. They sang songs, danced and told jokes. Julius, Leonard and Adolph Marx began making funny movies in nineteen twenty-nine. They changed their first names. Julius became Groucho. Leonard became Chico. Adolph became Harpo. Another brother, Herbert, appeared in the first five Marx Brothers movies. He was called Zeppo. He did not play a funny man like the other three. He played a good-looking young man. VOICE TWO:Groucho Marx looked funny. He had large black eyebrows and a hairy mustache. But they were painted on his face. He spoke very quickly. And he walked in a funny way. He played people with funny names, like Rufus T. Firefly. Otis B. Driftwood. And Doctor Hugo Z. Hackenbush. Groucho was not a very nice person in the movies. He often insulted or made fun of rich or important people. He made fun of doctors, college officials, opera singers, diplomats and government officials. He even insulted his son, played in this example by Zeppo. (SOUND)((ZEPPO: Dad, let me congratulate you. I’m proud to be your son.GROUCHO: My boy, you took the words right out of my mouth. I’m ashamed to be your father. I’d have horsewhipped you if I had a horse. You may go now. Leave your name and address for the girl outside and if anything turns up, we’ll get in touch with you. Where are you going?ZEPPO: Well, you just told me to go.GROUCHO: So that’s what they taught you in college. Just when I tell you to go, you leave me. You know you can’t leave a schoolroom without raising your hand, no matter where you’re going.ZEPPO: Anything further, father?GROUCHO: Anything further, father? That can’t be right. Isn’t it “anything father, further”? The idea! I married your mother because I wanted children. Imagine my disappointment when you arrived!))VOICE ONE:Chico Marx talked as if he was born in Italy. He spoke English that was not correct. Many other funny men spoke as though they came from other countries. They were making fun of themselves and other immigrants who did not speak English well. Chico also made funny jokes about words and expressions that sound alike but have different meanings. For example, in one movie a woman sings with a very high falsetto voice. She says “I have a falsetto voice.” Chico then says, “Well, my last student had a false set of teeth.” Chico also was known for performing what was called the comedy of the absurd. He talked about things that were so untrue or unreasonable that they were funny. Here is an example. Chico is supposed to spy on someone called Rufus T. Firefly. Chico reports his progress to the man who asked him to spy on Firefly. To “shadow” someone is to secretly follow that person. (SOUND)((CHICO: Well, you remember you gave us a picture of this man and said follow him?MAN: Oh, yes.CHICO: Well, we get on the job right away. And in one hour, even less than one hour, we lose the fix. That’s pretty good work, eh? MAN: I want a full, detailed report of your investigation.CHICO: All right. I tell you. Monday we watch Firefly’s house. But he no come out. He wasn’t home. Tuesday we go to the ballgame, but he fool us. He no show up. Wednesday, he go to the ballgame, but we fool him. We no show up. Thursday was a double-header, nobody show up. Friday it rained all day. There was no ballgame. So we stayed home. We listened to it over the radio.MAN: Then you didn’t shadow Firefly!CHICO: Oh, sure, we shadow Firefly. We shadow him all day.MAN: What day was that?CHICO: It was Shadowday (Saturday)! That’s some joke, eh, Boss!))Chico also played the piano in a funny way. Chico did to music what he did to the English language. He made fun of it. (MUSIC)VOICE TWO:Harpo Marx had curly yellow hair, but it was not really his hair. It was false hair, called a wig. He never said a word in any of the movies. Instead, he acted out what he wanted to say. He could make people laugh without saying a word. People always knew what he was thinking. He made funny sounds with horns and whistles to express his thoughts and feelings. In one movie, a kind policeman tries to give him some advice to stay away from bad people. As the policeman shakes Harpo’s hand, you can hear pieces of silver that Harpo has stolen fall out of his clothes. (SOUND)((POLICEMAN: You better come with me, young fellow.GROUCHO: Don’t take him away, officer.POLICEMAN: All right. I’ll let him go this time. But I want to give you some advice. You’re running around with the wrong kind of people. Why don’t you go home?CHICO: He got no home.POLICEMAN: Go home for a few nights. Stay home. Don’t you know your poor old mother sits there, night after night, waiting to hear your steps on the stairs?CHICO: He got no stairs.POLICEMAN: I can see a little light burning in the window.GROUCHO: No you can’t. The gas company turned it off.POLICEMAN: Now, what I’m telling you is for your own good. And if you listen to me, you can’t go wrong.))As you might have guessed from his name, Harpo Marx was famous for playing the musical instrument called the harp. He made beautiful music like this on the harp in several movies. Article/200802/28038襄樊市中心医院医术信得过? When you jet off on your summer holiday, the most thought you are likely to give to your home is to worry whether you locked the back door or not. But, your house is almost certainly the most valuable thing you own, so rather than letting it sit idle while you're away, make it work for you and save thousands of pounds on your holiday in the process by trying out a home-swap. Instead of forking out hundreds or even thousands of pounds for a hotel or villa, the idea is that you swap homes with someone in your holiday destination. While you bask in the Florida sun for nothing, another family gets to explore the delights of your hometown in return. The financial attractions are clear. Whether you stay a week or a month, you only have to pay for your flights. If you want to rent a villa of the same standard as your own home, you will have to pay a fortune. Swapping saves you all that expense. But the advantages aren't just financial. If you swap with another family with children everything is there, they have toys to play with and the house is child-proof. And the benefits are not just for the kids - swappers will often include all sorts of things in the exchange that may prove invaluable for adults too. You can swap cars to save on hire-car costs, for example, and even leave your cars at the airport for one another to save on taxis. The host family can also help ease you into their local area, so you can avoid getting sucked into tourist traps. Lois Sealey, who owns exchange service Home Base Holidays, recommends swappers create an information pack, telling people the best places to visit in the local area, where to eat and drink and where to avoid. There are also precautions you can take to keep your home safe. The main one is getting to know your swapper reasonably well before you travel. Initial contact tends to be by email through home-swap sites such as homebase-hols.com, exchangeaway.com and intervac.com. Then, once you have found a potential swapper, you should make sure you contact them regularly. You should also draw up an agreement in writing, including addresses and dates, what is included in the swap, who will cover costs such as phone calls or gas bills, and what to do if something gets broken. And even once you are fully confident of the other person, it's still quite common to lock away family heirlooms, breakables or confidential documents in the loft or garage, or to leave them with a friend or relative. However, while it's important to take precautions, home swappers stress that problems are rare, and that exchanging homes can be an uplifting experience, as well as a good way to get a cheap holiday. Where would we be without the media? How would we get information about the world? All of us are interested in the news. We all want to know what’s happening around the world. We switch the TV on just to watch the news. It seems as though every train passenger has a newspaper. The journalists who bring us the news do a very important job. Many risk their lives to bring us the news from the world’s danger zones. Unfortunately, many reporters are killed while they are covering a war. The media make us feel we are part of the world. We become experts on other countries and on the big news stories. The media also bring us many unforgettable images, such as a man walking on the moon. Really, the media show us history as it happens. Article/201105/138568 Time isn't on my side. Another year has passed, and the completion of my junior year is the essence of my thought. What a year it has been.I ritually write a column summarizing the new theories of each of my years. Now I'm a 20-year-old college student, bittersweet at having one year remaining. I have 10 points to share on my latest stop on my journey to commencement. #8226;The navigating one. Why can college be so utopian, so realistic, but so unrealistic? I've been fortunate this year to get most things my way. But my encouragement to freshmen is stick to the fight. The race is given to the swift, but you must see the goal before you take off running. Find your niche on campus, and maximize your potential in that domain.#8226;The prodigious two: Academic and extra-curricular achievement is important, but communication skills and personality are a must! Personality is everything. Look at the world's most famous celebrities—they have talent, but personality is the driving force in their success. If you don't have it, you won't make it—plain and simple.#8226;The third eye. Know your value. You don't have to be arrogant or overly cocky. Never settle for less—in relationships, jobs or grades. A man must know his value in a world where he is constantly marketing himself. But don't value yourself so highly you are unable to learn from others.#8226;The sniping four: Don't let your college experience overshadow your family. Fall semester, I realized my college career was taking up so much of my life that I was neglecting my family. I quickly fixed the problem. Habitat my need your help building a house, but don't let your family's framework fall apart at home.#8226;The oracle five: This is for those who make the laws and regulations we live by. Please don't be naive. Just because it's illegal doesn't mean students are not doing it! Students, dont’be naive and think Crimewatch won't discover you. We're not immune to anything.#8226;Nostradamus six. Things may change, but we still have room to grow. Downtown has finally opened up to the black students. We can have parties and events comfortably at a few of the downtown clubs—which has been lacking. All downtown clubs don't have a welcome mat. They claim their insurance policy doesn't cover "hip-hop parties."#8226;The turbulent seven: Never date anyone you couln't see marrying or being in a long-lasting relationship with. The older you get, the more tiring relationship games are.#8226;Ethereal eight: Just trust the process! Things in life happen for a reason. We've all had situations we didn't enderstand. I'm beginning to see why god allowed certain things in my life to occur: they have made me a better, stronger, realer person.#8226;The illmatic nine: Have fun here and everwhere! Lately, I've had this desire to road trip. I realized this year that clasees are gonna be hard—so let's roll down to Atlanta for a party on a Thursday night or jump over to South Carolina for a weekend.#8226;The talented tenth: Nothing in life is guaranteed—a college degree, financial aid, nothing. Sometimes we think we're giving 100 percent to a cause and we'll fall short of the talented tenth needed to obtain what we want.
