You know, the mind whizzes away like a washing machine going round and round,你们知道的,大脑(心灵)总是像一台洗衣机般飕飕运转,反反复复,lots of difficult, confusing emotions, and we dont really know how to deal with that. And the sad fact is that we are so distracted that were no longer present in the world in which we live. We miss out on the things that are most important to us,我们错过了对我们而言最重要的事情,and the crazy thing is that everybody just assumes, thats the way life is,而疯狂的是每个人都只是以为,哦,这就是生活,so weve just kind of got to get on with it. Thats really not how it has to be. So I was about 11 when I went along to my first meditation class. And trust me, it had all the stereotypes that you can imagine, the sitting cross-legged on the floor,相信我,课里有所有你能想到的关于冥想的成见,盘腿坐在地板上,the incense, the herbal tea, the vegetarians, the whole deal,焚香,药茶,素食主义者,全部东西,but my mom was going and I was intrigued, so I went along with her. Id also seen a few kung fu movies, and secretly I kind of thought I might be able to learn how to fly,我还看了几部功夫电影,私下里我想我或许能学会怎么飞起来,but I was very young at the time. Now as I was there, I guess, like a lot of people, I assumed that it was just an aspirin for the mind. You get stressed, you do some meditation. I hadnt really thought that it could be sort of preventative in nature,我不曾真的考虑那本质上会是一种阻碍,until I was about 20, when a number of things happened in my life in quite quick succession,直到我大约20岁,一些事情在我的人生中接连地发生,really serious things which just flipped my life upside down and all of a sudden I was inundated with thoughts,那是一些把我的生活整个颠倒的事情而突然之间我被各种思绪淹没了,inundated with difficult emotions that I didnt know how to cope with. Every time I sort of pushed one down, another one would pop back up again. It was a really very stressful time. 201705/510308。

  • Mr. President, Mr. Secretary-General, Excellencies, Ladies and Gentlemen, Thank you very much for all your kind words. I am deeply honoured by the trust and confidence Member States have placed in me, and determined to be guided by the purposes and principles of the Charter. But first of all, Id like to pay tribute to Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. Secretary-General, your principled leadership has helped to chart the future of the ed Nations – through the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development; through your commitment to peace and security; through your initiative to put human rights at the heart of our work. Under your direction, the world committed to the historic Paris Agreement on climate change – and ratified it in record time. I strongly believe this momentum is unstoppable. Dear Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, it is an honour to follow in your steps, defending the same values that unite us. Thank you very much. Mr. President, Twenty-one years ago, when I took the oath of office to become Prime Minister of Portugal, the world was riding a wave of optimism. The Cold War had ended, and some described that as the end of history. They believed we would live in a peaceful, stable world with economic growth and prosperity for all. But, the end of the Cold War wasnt the end of history. On the contrary, history had simply been frozen in some places. And when the old order melted away, history came back with a vengeance. Even hidden contradictions and tensions resurfaced. New wars multiplied and old ones reignited. And lack of clarity in power relations led progressively to greater unpredictability and impunity. Conflicts have become more complex – and interlinked – than ever before. They produce horrific violations of international humanitarian law and human rights abuses. And people have been forced to flee their homes on a scale unseen in decades. And a new threat has emerged – global terrorism. Megatrends – including climate change, population growth, rapid urbanization, food insecurity and water scarcity – have increased competition for resources and heightened tensions and instability. Mr. President, At the same time, the last 20 years have seen extraordinary technological progress. The global economy has grown; basic social indicators have improved. The proportion of people living in absolute poverty has fallen dramatically. But globalization and technological progress have also contributed to growing inequalities. A lot of people have been left behind, even including in developed countries where millions of old jobs have disappeared and new ones are out of reach for many. In many parts, youth unemployment has exploded. And globalization has also broadened the reach of organized crime and trafficking. All this has deepened the divide between people and political establishments. In some countries, we have seen growing instability, social unrest – even violence and conflict. And a little bit everywhere, voters now tend to reject the status quo, and whatever Government proposal is put to a referendum. Many have lost confidence not only in their Governments, but in global institutions – including the ed Nations. Mr. President, Fear is driving the decisions of many people around the world. And we must understand their anxieties and meet their needs, without losing sight of our universal values. It is time to reconstruct relations between people and leaders – national and international; time for leaders to listen and show that they care about their own people and about the global stability and solidarity on which we all depend. And it is time for the ed Nations to do the same: to recognize its shortcomings and to reform the way it works. The Organization is the cornerstone of multilateralism, and has contributed to decades of relative peace. But, the challenges are now surpassing our ability to respond. UN must be y to change. Our most serious shortcoming – and here I refer to the entire international community – is our inability to prevent crises. The ed Nations was born from war. Today, we must be here for peace.
Li Hua会学到两个常用语:bail和call it quits。M: Agghh! Come on, Li Hua. We've been studying for five hours. I'm y to bail!L: 是啊,我们做了5个小时的功课,我也想干点儿别的了。可是Michael, 你说你准备做什么?You're y to bail。 I said "I'm y to bail". "To bail" as in "to leave".L: 噢,To bail在这里是"离开"的意思。 I aly know the material. I'm y for tomorrow's test. Let's bail and get something to eat!L: 好吧,我肚子也饿了,Let's bail and get something to eat! I went to a movie with some friends last night. After the movie, they wanted to go to a dance club, but I bailed on them and went home to get some sleep.L: 噢,你昨天晚上和朋友去看电影,然后你的朋友们去跳舞,可是you bailed on them, 意思就是你没和他们一起去,对不对?M: That's right. I bailed on my friends and went home.L: 噢,那Michael, 除了可以说bail on someone, 还可不可以说bail on something呢?M: Of course! For instance, last week I had a dentist appointment, so I had to bail on history class.L: 对啊,上星期,你因为要去看牙,所以没有上历史课,You bailed on history class.M: Come on, Li Hua. I'm starving. Let's bail and get something to eat!(Door open and the two leave...)******M: (in restaurant) By the way, Li Hua, I heard that Jack isn't going to be in school next term. Is he really calling it quits?L: 什么?Jack下学期就不来上学啦? 你是说Jack下学期就要退学啦?M: Ya, that's right. "To call it quits" means to quit doing something. I heard that Jack is calling it quits.L: 噢,to call it quits意思就是"停止做某件事",可是,我听说Jack只不过是想先打半年工,多挣点钱,明年他还会回来继续上学,He's not really calling it quits.M: That's good to hear.L: Michael, 那这个to call it quits还可以用在别的地方吗?M: Sometimes "to call it quits" means to break up a relationship between a boyfriend and girlfriend.L: 噢,原来to call it quits还可以用来表示男女朋友分手,这就让我想到啦,不久前好莱坞电影明星Ben Afleck和Jennifer Lopez, 他们俩本来都订婚了,可是后来又推迟了婚礼,大家就觉得很奇怪啊:Are Ben and J-Lo calling it quits?M: (sighs) I can't stand those two. I hope that this time they are calling it quits for real, so I never have to hear about them again.L: 你倒希望他们俩真分手,这样你再也不会听到他们的消息啦。嗨,Michael你也真是的,他们写他们的,你不看不就得了。你不是老说功课太多吗?对了,你还说选修的阿拉伯语课太难 - Are you going to call it quits?M: No, I'm not going to call it quits! I am going to finish it.L: 哇,从来没见过你这么大的决心呐!我还记得你学中文的时候有好几次都想call it quits呢!M: Whatever.今天李华学到了两个常用语,一个是bail, 表示"离开"。另一个是call it quits, 意思是"停止做某件事"。 /200602/3157。
