Heavy ground fighting was reported in several cities across Libya Tuesday, the fourth day of a U.N.-backed effort to establish a no-fly zone across the north of the country. U.S. confirmed one of its jets crash-landed while taking part in that effort. The international coalition plans to extend the zone from the rebel stronghold of Benghazi in the east to the capital, Tripoli, 1,000 kilometers to the west. Loyalist forces in Tripoli sent up anti-aircraft fire in an attempt to ward off strikes by fighter jets sent by the U.S., France and Britain. The U.S. said Tuesday that one of its jets crash-landed in Libya the day before. The military said the likely cause was mechanical problems, not hostile fire. The U.S. military says both crew members have been rescued. Despite the expanding no-fly zone coverage - part of a U.N. resolution to protect civilians from Libyan government attacks - opposition sources in two western towns report continuing fighting. Residents said pro-Gadhafi forces are on the offensive in both Misrata and Zintan, and report civilian casualties. Those claims could not be independently confirmed. Strains in international backing for the mission increased Tuesday, with China joining the list of dissenters. Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu said Beijing wants an immediate cease-fire and seeks a peaceful resolution to the conflict. China, like fellow critic Russia, abstained from backing the U.N. resolution authorizing the attacks, but did not veto the measure. The Arab League, which initially supported the U.N. move, has also expressed reservations. All say they are concerned about possible civilian casualties and a humanitarian crisis - exactly what the measure aims to prevent. 201103/128937Chinese invest in US homes A group of 40 Chinese investors is looking to place money in the US housing market, CNN's Emily Chang reports. At the Beijing Airport, 40 Chinese investors embark on a mission to open their wallets on the other side of the world and buy a house in the ed States.“The price's right,” says lawyer Yin Guohua. For him, it will be a home away from home, a place to stay on business and quite simply an opportunity to get a deal.“It sounds cheap,” says this business woman, “but I’ll have to see it with my own eyes.”Their journey will take them on a tour of bargain and foreclosure properties from L.A. to Las Vegas, San Francisco, Boston and New York. Yin says he’s been watching the US Housing market for two years. He’s willing to spend up to a million dollars and pay it all at once.“This could be a positive stimulus for the American economy,” he says. He’s a family man who aly owns 3 properties in Beijing. “Our son will have a place to stay when he goes to America for school some day,” his wife says. The house hunting trip is being run by a Chinese real estate brokerage, Soufun.com. The company says it received hundreds of applications for just 40 spots from Chinese eager to invest overseas, but it raised questions: Are the Chinese capitalizing on the misfortune of Americans in the Subprime Mortgage Crisis and is this the start of a dangerous flow of capital out of China when China's own economy is slowing down?“It is still a very, very small fraction of the purchasing power here in China. So I don't think, you know, er, this, er, you know, small group of people, because of their personal interest or their, for whatever reason is going to affect the China's demand for properties.”Foreigners can buy property in the US under fairly simple guidelines, they may have to make a bigger down payment or pay more taxes. And investment experts say China's restrictions on transferring money out of the country are relatively easy to navigate.Yin has his eyes on a few homes in New York and L.A., but like any smart investor, he says he won't make a deal unless it's a good one.Emily Chang, CNN, Beijing.Vocabulary:1. embark on: begin or start (a piece of work, etc.) 2. bargain: something you buy cheaply or for less than its usual price廉价货3. foreclosure: A situation in which a homeowner is unable to make principal and/or interest payments on his or her mortgage, so the lender, be it a bank or building society, can seize and sell the property as stipulated in the terms of the mortgage contract. 4. brokerage: a business, firm, or company whose business is to act as a broker经纪人(或中间人)业务5. Presidential Candidates Make Appeals in Key States美两党总统候选人做选战最后冲刺 The major U.S. presidential candidates are making last-minute appeals in hotly contested states in advance of Tuesday's election. Democrat Barack Obama and Republican John McCain are focusing on a handful of states that could determine the winner. In Pennsylvania, New Hampshire and Florida, John McCain targeted the tax plan of his Democratic opponent, who McCain says aims to redistribute wealth and stifle economic growth. McCain, a former Navy pilot and senator from Arizona, told voters in Scranton, Pennsylvania, they have a choice. Senator Obama is running to be re-distributionist in chief," he said. "I'm running to be commander in chief." Barack Obama campaigned Sunday in major cities in the key Midwestern state of Ohio, which has backed the winning candidate in each of the last 11 presidential races. Public opinion surveys show a tight race in Ohio. Most give Obama a narrow lead. The Democrat focused on the economy and the anxiety that many Americans feel because of the nation's financial crisis. Obama says his tax plan would offer relief to nearly all U.S. workers and small business owners. National polls show Obama leading over McCain, aided partly by concerns over the economy. But the race is close in the half dozen or so key states that could decide the election. The U.S. president is chosen on a tally of electoral votes from individual states, not the national popular vote count. Ohio has 20 electoral votes of the 270 that are needed to win the election. In Cleveland on Sunday, Obama urged his supporters to be sure they cast their ballots. At this defining moment in history, all of you can give this country the change we need, and it starts right here in Ohio," he said. "It starts right here in Cleveland." Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin campaigned in several smaller Ohio cities, while Democratic vice presidential candidate Joe Biden was in another key state, Florida. As Obama and McCain near the end of a nearly two year campaign, their political parties are mobilizing supporters in a massive get-out-the-vote drive. Early voting is underway in 34 U.S. states. McCain campaign manager Rick Davis says the key states of Ohio, Florida and Virginia, which voted Republican in 2004, are still in play. Speaking on the Fox News Sunday program, Davis said McCain made a comeback in his fight for his party's nomination, and is doing it again. He has been counted out before and won these kinds of states," Davis said. "And we are in the process of winning them right now." On the same program, Obama campaign manager David Plouffe said Democrats are focusing their final efforts on voters who have not made up their minds. There are still undecided voters out there, so in these last 48 hours we are continuing to talk about the economy, Barack Obama's plans for the middle class, and we are just trying to turn out every single supporter we have so we have historic turn-out on Tuesday," said Plouffe. John McCain will visit seven states on Monday, ending the marathon effort in his home state of Arizona. Barack Obama will make campaign stops in Florida, North Carolina and Virginia, then spend election day in his home city of Chicago. 200811/54999
