They include how to handle cutlery and how to eat in a civilized manner. The world#39;s largest travel and digital publisher, Lonely Planet has assembled etiquette tips. It warns of blunders you should avoid at table. ;It celebrates the fun of travel. Sometimes they are funny and sometimes they are informative,; said US editor Robert Reid, whose team pulled together tidbits from various cross-cultural books. Lonely Planet: It is ;perfectly; okay to slurp when you eat noodles.“孤独星球”:吃面时“滋滋”出声是“完全”没有问题的。Tradition: Unlike making big noises, slurping mildly is not rude but is a compliment to the chef. Japanese also say it tastes better if you slurp. What else to watch: It#39;s important to say traditional phrases of thanks before and after a meal. Eat sushi whole. Dip the fish part rather than the rice into soy sauce. Lonely Planet: Your wrists should be placed on the edge of the table while eating, fork in left hand, knife in the right.“孤独星球”:用餐时手腕要放在桌子边缘,左手拿叉,右手拿刀。Tradition: Keep your hands in sight. It is not good manners to rest them on your lap. Keep your elbows off the table. What else to watch: Leave some food on your plate to show that the host has given you enough to eat. Or the host will ask if you#39;d like to have a second helping. It#39;s polite to mop up excess sauce or gravy with b. Lonely Planet: don#39;t ask for salt and pepper if it is not on the table. ;Asking for any kind of seasoning or condiment; will offend the cook.“孤独星球”:如果桌子上没有摆放盐或胡椒瓶,不能主动去索要。 Tradition: Cooks are highly respected in Portugal. What else to watch: Place your napkin on your lap, and don#39;t eat with your fingers. Don#39;t switch cutlery between hands. Lonely Planet: never discuss money or religion over dinner. Going Dutch is considered ;the height of unsophistication;.“孤独星球”:餐桌上不要讨论金钱或宗教信仰问题。 Tradition: In France, a meal is like a ceremony. People relish it and make it#39;s a special occasion. What else to watch: In contrast to the etiquette in Russia, it#39;s considered good manners to finish everything on your plate. People often cut b directly on a table cloth rather than on a plate. Tear your b into bite-sized pieces before eating. Taking a bite from the whole piece is very impolite。 Lonely Planet: Whenever you catch the eye of someone who#39;s eating, even a stranger, it#39;s good manners to say ;provecho;, which means enjoy.“孤独星球”:如果你跟某个正在用餐的人目光相遇,哪怕是陌生人,你也应礼貌地说:“provecho”, 即“祝您好胃口”的意思。Tradition: In Mexico, dining is more than a meal. It#39;s a social occasion - lunches are rarely quick and suppers can last for hours. What else to watch: Where you sit matters in the country. Before you get seated, look for place cards, or wait until the host seats you. And you must say ;enjoy your meal; before you leave the table。 /201205/184787Grooming and personal hygiene have been around for ages. It's hard to imagine a time when people weren't concerned with taking care of their appearance and their bodies. Perhaps these practices started when Adam first took a bath and combed his hair before going on a date with Eve. Or maybe they began when Eve put on some herbal makeup to make herself more beautiful. No matter where they started, grooming and personal hygiene have become an important part of everyone's daily routine. You might think that all modern societies would have the same grooming and personal hygiene practices. After all, doesn't everybody take baths? Most people do recognize the need for hygiene, which is the basis for cleanliness and health-and a good way to keep one's friends. Grooming practices include all the little things people do to make themselves look their best, such as combing their hair and putting on makeup. However, while most modern people agree that these things are important, people in different cultures take care of themselves in different ways. There used to be an old joke in America that people should take a bath once a week, whether they need one or not. In fact, though, Americans generally take a bath-or more commonly, a shower-every day. But in contrast to some cultures, most Americans get their shower in the morning, so they can s tart the day fresh. And instead of going to a beauty parlor for a shampoo, many Americans prefer to wash and style their own hair. So if Americans have a "bad hair day," they have no one to blame but themselves. But most people in America do head for the beauty parlor or barber shop occasionally for a haircut, a perm or just some friendly conversation. Americans are known for having very sensitive noses. In America, "B.O." (body odor) is socially unacceptable. For that reason, Americans consider the use of deodorant or anti-perspirant a must. Ladies often add a touch of perfume for an extra fresh scent. Men may splash on after-shave lotion or manly-smelling cologne. Another cultural no-no in America is bad breath. Americans don't like to smell what other people ate for lunch-especially onions or garlic. Their solution? Mouthwash, breath mints and even brushing their teeth after meals. Some of the cultural variations in grooming practices result from physical differences between races. Whereas many Asian men have little facial hair, Westerners have a lot. As a result, most American men spend some time each day shaving or grooming their facial hair. Beards and mustaches are common sights in America, although their popularity changes from generation to generation. Most American men who wear facial hair try to keep it nicely trimmed. American women, on the other hand, generally prefer not to be hairy at all. Many of them regularly shave their legs and armpits. Americans put great value on both grooming and personal hygiene. For some people, taking care of themselves has become almost a religion. As the old saying goes, "Cleanliness is next to godliness." Whether or not being clean and well-groomed brings one closer to God, it certainly brings one closer to others. Americans look down on people who don't take care of themselves, or who "let themselves go." To Americans, even if we don't have much to work with, we have to make the best of what we've got. /201004/100470

It#39;s one thing to want to get fit, but it#39;s a whole other thing to actually do it. Going from couch potato to enthusiastic exerciser takes some serious motivation and a fitness plan that#39;s easy to follow. We went to celebrity fitness guru David Kirsch;the man behind the bodies of Heidi Klum and Anne Hathaway;to get his tips for getting your butt off the couch and working out. His simple plan will help you get toned, without having to morph into a total gym rat. The easiest way to discourage yourself is to set an unreasonable goal;there will be no way for you to hit it and you#39;ll wind up getting frustrated and giving up. Kirsch recommends setting an obtainable goal, such as ;I want to lose five pounds,; or ;I want to fit into my skinny jeans.;制定一个不切实际的目标是最容易让自己泄气的;;你根本没有办法实现它,而且只会让自己越来越沮丧,最后放弃。 It#39;s also important to be realistic about your time frame and the amount of exercise you do each day. Don#39;t start off at two hours a day;you#39;ll burn out. If you are not sure what you#39;re doing, find a good trainer or training material to guide you. You don#39;t need to go to the gym to exercise,; says Kirsch. The easiest way to start your new fitness routine is to incorporate exercise into your daily routine. When you get out of bed in the morning, before heading to the shower, do 15 knee bends, 15 lunges and 15 crunches. When you#39;re making breakfast, do some isometric contractions: squeeze and release your abs, your butt, your thighs. Get your body moving with a 10 minute express workout;be it yoga or stretching or cardio;every day before work. If you start that way and build from that, you#39;re more likely to stick with a program. Find Time For Fitness利用零碎时间减肥Feel like there#39;s no time in the day to squeeze in exercise? Kirsch says that any exercise is beneficial, no matter how little. The reality is that our lifestyles are conflicting and everyone has different physical needs for exercise. Ideally, you should be doing an hour of exercise a day, but if you can only find time for 10 minutes, than 10 minutes of focused training beats doing nothing. According to Kirsch, the number one biggest mistake women make while exercising is not focusing on what they are doing. That means no more cell phone, no more magazines and no more TV while you are working out. You need to make the most of your time at the gym while you are there. Sitting on the tmill and talking on the phone doesn#39;t give you the exercise you really need. Whatever you are doing, focus. Connect your brain and your body so you can really focus on what you are trying to accomplish. /201203/1740881.
