Alison Bechdel is a comic book artist,艾莉森·贝克德尔是一个漫画作家,and back in the mid-80s, she recorded this conversation在80年代中期,,她记录下了她和一个朋友shed had with a friend about assessing the movies that they saw. And its very simple. Theres just three questions you should ask:非常简单,只有三个问题:Is there more than one character in the movie这部电影中是否有一个以上的角色that is female who has lines? So try to meet that bar. And do these women talk to each other at any point in the movie? And is their conversation about something other than如果交谈了,有没有跟她们共同的心上人the guy that they both like? Right? Thank you. Thank you very much. Two women who exist and talk to each other about stuff. It does happen. 我看过,and yet I very rarely see it in the movies但是在我们看过的和喜欢的电影中that we know and love. In fact, this week I went to see事实上,这个星期我刚看过a very high-quality movie, ;Argo.;一部质量不错的电影《阿尔戈》(Argo)。Right? Oscar buzz, doing great at the box office,奥斯卡热门电影,票房很好,a consensus idea of what a quality Hollywood film is. It pretty much flunks the Bechdel test. And I dont think it should, because a lot of the movie,我觉得这不应该。 I dont know if youve seen it, but a lot of the movie不知道你们看过没有,电影中的大部分情节takes place in this embassy where men and women都发生在发生人质劫持事件的大使馆内,are hiding out during the hostage crisis. Weve got quite a few scenes of the men我们看到好几个场景,having deep, angst-ridden conversations in this hideout,男人们在藏身处深刻而充满焦虑的对话。and the great moment for one of the actresses is而电影中一个女演员最出的情节to peek through the door and say, ;Are you coming to bed, honey?;是隔着一扇门问道,“睡觉么,亲爱的?”Thats Hollywood for you. So lets look at the numbers. 2011, of the 100 most popular movies,2011年前100部最流行的电影中,how many of them do you think actually have female protagonists? Eleven. Its not bad.11部。 Its not as many percent as the number of women就刚刚普选出的国会议员中weve just elected to Congress, so thats good. But there is a number that is greater than this接下来这个比例比刚才的要高thats going to bring this room down. Last year, The New York Times published a study去年,纽约时报发表了一份that the government had done. Heres what it said. One out of five women in America每五名美国女性中就有一位say that they have been sexually assaulted some time in their life. Now, I dont think thats the fault of popular entertainment. I dont think kids movies have anything to do with that. I dont even think that我甚至觉得music s or pornography are really directly related to that,色情音乐和电影跟这都没有直接关系,but something is going wrong,但是肯定哪里出问题了。and when I hear that statistic,当我听到这个统计数字,one of the things I think of is我当时想到的是thats a lot of sexual assailants. Who are these guys? What are they learning? What are they failing to learn? Are they absorbing the story that他们有没有理解电影的情节,a male heros job is to defeat the villain with violence一个男性英雄打败了残暴的反派and then collect the reward, which is a woman然后获得荣誉和奖励--就是一个没有朋友who has no friends and doesnt speak? Are we soaking up that story?我们有没有从这些故事中吸取到什么?201510/404661That was, as you can imagine, devastating news. First, I cried--actually, I sobbed--for about half an hour. And then I said, lets go to it; thats all you get, its half an hour. You need to focus on the now, what you need to do now. So I contacted a child trauma specialist. I put together a team of investigators. I made sure the girls had counseling and support. And Gayle and I got on a plane and flew to South Africa. And the whole time I kept asking that question: What is this here to teach me? And, as difficult as that experience has been, I got a lot of lessons. I understand now the mistakes I made, because I had been paying attention to all of the wrong things. Id built that school from the outside in, when what really mattered was the inside out. So its a lesson that applies to all of our lives as a whole. What matters most is whats inside. What matters most is the sense of integrity, of quality and beauty. I got that lesson. And what I know is that the girls came away with something, too. They have emerged from this more resilient and knowing that their voices have power. And their resilience and spirit have given me more than I could ever give to them, which leads me to my final lesson--the one about finding happiness--which we could talk about all day, but I know you have other wacky things to do. /201311/266216Thank you. Thank you. Thank you, so much. Thank you, all. Thank you very, very much. Well, this isnt exactly the party Id planned, but I sure like the company. And I want to start today by saying how grateful I am to all of you,我想以表达对你们所有人的感谢来开始, to everyone who poured your hearts and your hopes into this campaign,所有倾注了你们的心血和希望的人、 who drove for miles and lined the streets waving homemade signs,不远万里开车赶来站在街道两旁挥舞自制的标语的人、 who scrimped and saved to raise money,靠精打细算地节省来筹集资金的人、 who knocked on doors and made calls,敲门拜访和致电的人、 who talked, sometimes argued with your friends and neighbors,因谈论我而有时与朋友或邻居争论的人、 who e-mailed and contributed online,给我发过电子邮件和上网持我的人、 who invested so much in our common enterprise,给我们共同的事业投资巨款的人、 to the moms and dads who came to our events, who lifted their little girls and little boys on their shoulders and whispered in their ears,来到选举现场把女儿或儿子举在肩头的妈妈爸爸们,并对孩子轻声耳语, ;See, you can be anything you want to be.;“瞧,只要你想,你可以做成任何事”。201411/339832

Hi, everybody. About a year ago, I promised that 2014 would be a breakthrough year for America. And this week, we got more evidence to back that up. In December, our businesses created 240,000 new jobs. The unemployment rate fell to 5.6%. 5.6%。That means that 2014 was the strongest year for job growth since the 1990s. In 2014, unemployment fell faster than it has in three decades. Over a 58-month streak, our businesses have created 11.2 million new jobs. After a decade of decline, American manufacturing is in its best stretch of job growth since the ‘90s. America is now the worlds number one producer of oil and gas, helping to save drivers about a buck-ten a gallon at the pump over this time last year. Thanks to the Affordable Care Act, about 10 million Americans have gained health insurance in the past year alone. We have cut our deficits by about two-thirds. 2/3。And after 13 long years, our war in Afghanistan has come to a responsible end, and more of our brave troops have come home. It has been six years since the crisis. Those years have demanded hard work and sacrifice on everybodys part. So as a country, we have every right to be proud of what weve got to show for it. Americas resurgence is real. And now that weve got some calmer waters, if we all do our part, if we all pitch in, we can make sure that tide starts lifting all boats again. We can make sure that the middle class is the engine that powers Americas prosperity for decades to come. Thatll be the focus of my State of the Union Address in a couple weeks-building on the progress weve made. But I figured, why wait-lets get started right now. On Wednesday, I visited a Ford plant outside of Detroit-because the American auto industry and its home state are redefining the word “comeback.” On Thursday, I traveled to Arizona, a state that was hit among the hardest by the housing crisis, to announce a new plan that will put hundreds of dollars in new homeowners pockets, and help more new families buy their first home. And, Im speaking with you today from Pellissippi State Community College in Tennessee, a state making big strides in education, to unveil my new plan to make two years ofcommunity college free for every responsible student. Im also here to establish a new hub that will attract more good-paying, high-tech manufacturing jobs to our shores. Making homeownership easier. Bringing a higher education within reach. Creating more good jobs that pay good wages. These are just some of the ways we can help every American get ahead in the new economy. And theres more to come. Because America is coming back. And I want to go full speed ahead. Thanks, everybody, and have a great weekend. 201501/354539

This week, the ed States and our international partners finally achieved something that decades of animosity has not – a deal that will prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon. This deal will make America and the world safer and more secure. Still, youre going to hear a lot of overheated and often dishonest arguments about it in the weeks ahead. So today, I want to take a moment to take those on one by one, and explain what this deal does and what it means. First, youll hear some critics argue that this deal somehow makes it easier for Iran to obtain a nuclear weapon. Now, if you think it sounds strange that the ed States, Great Britain, France, Germany, Russia, China, and some of the worlds best nuclear scientists would agree to something like that, youre right. This deal actually closes off Irans pathway to a nuclear weapon. Today, Iran has enough nuclear material to produce up to 10 nuclear weapons. With this deal, theyll have to ship 98% of that material out of the country – leaving them with a fraction of what it takes to make even one weapon. With this deal, theyll have to repurpose two key nuclear facilities so they cant produce materials that could be used for a nuclear weapon. So this deal actually pushes Iran further away from a bomb. And theres a permanent prohibition on Iran ever having a nuclear weapon. Second, you might hear from critics that Iran could just ignore whats required and do whatever they want. That theyre inevitably going to cheat. Well, thats wrong, too. With this deal, we will have unprecedented, 24/7 monitoring of Irans key nuclear facilities. With this deal, international inspectors will have access to Irans entire nuclear supply chain. The verification process set up by this deal is comprehensive and it is intrusive – precisely so we can make sure Iran keeps its commitments. Third, you might hear from critics that Iran faces no consequences if it violates this deal. Thats also patently false. If Iran violates this deal, the sanctions we imposed that have helped cripple the Iranian economy – the sanctions that helped make this deal possible – would snap back into place promptly. Theres a reason this deal took so long to negotiate. Because we refused to accept a bad deal. We held out for a deal that met every one of our bottom lines. And we got it. Does this deal resolve all of the threats Iran poses to its neighbors and the world? No. Does it do more than anyone has done before to make sure Iran does not obtain a nuclear weapon? Yes. And that was our top priority from the start. Thats why its in everyones best interest to make sure this deal holds. Because without this deal, there would be no limits on Irans nuclear program. There would be no monitoring, no inspections. The sanctions we rallied the world to impose would unravel. Iran could move closer to a nuclear weapon. Other countries in the region might race to do the same. And wed risk another war in the most volatile region in the world. Thats what would happen without this deal. On questions of war and peace, we should have tough, honest, serious debates. Weve seen what happens when we dont. Thats why this deal is online for the whole world to see. I welcome all scrutiny. I fear no questions. As Commander-in-Chief, I make no apology for keeping this country safe and secure through the hard work of diplomacy over the easy rush to war. And on Tuesday, Ill continue to press this case when I address the national convention of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Because nobody understands the true cost of war better than those whove actually served in this countrys uniform. We have before us an historic opportunity to pursue a safer, more secure world for our children. It might not come around again in our lifetimes. Thats why were going to seize it today – and keep America a beacon of hope, liberty, and leadership for generations to come. Thank you, and have a great weekend. 201507/387929
