But even harder than the technological troubles are the political ones as preposterous as it might sound to many of us但在技术难题之外 更复杂的是政治难题也许看起来有点荒谬there are great many people claim that climate change is a hoax很多人都声称气候变化只是个骗局perpetrated by an international conspiracy of scientists and government officials是科学家和政府官员编造的国际阴谋Oh but it were that simple有这么简单吗If there were a conspiracy our path forward would be easy如果确实是阴谋我们前进的道路就简单了None of us would be responsible for climate change没人需要对气候变化负责It would be those bad guys. All wed have to do is expose them and everything would be fine but my friends, there is no such thing需要负责的是坏人 我们只需要曝光坏人就行了一切都会很好但是朋友们 根本不是这样的Have you ever tried to get along with a bunch of scientists? Theyre at each others throats and theyre happy about it他们吵得不可开交 而且乐此不疲Climate change is happening because we are all using the atmosphere for chemical energy and as ways to dump our airborne carbon气候变化正在发生因为我们都在使用大气提供化学能并往空气中排出碳Its a much more complicated problem than any that could be caused by a misguided conspirator这个问题太过复杂根本就不是一个阴谋者能够想出来的Conspiracy theories are for lazy people people that dont want to get down to business at hand阴谋论只适用于懒人只适用于不想严肃考虑问题的人So everybody, please dismiss those ideas at once我请所有人立刻摒弃阴谋论观点The US cannot wait for the others we have to overcome the notion that美国不能等别人我们不能总想着since other large carbon dioxide emitters like China, Russia and India其它二氧化碳排放大国 例如中国 俄罗斯 印度have not come around to the idea of reducing emissions都没有考虑减排 then the ed States and the class of 2014 shouldnt either那么美国和2014届毕业生也不应该考虑减排201510/404495But to put that in context:我们把这些数字写下来:5.93 million years ago593万年前was when our earliest primate human ancestors stood up. That was the first upright primate. Okay, so when we talk about how much time were currently investing因此,当我们谈论我们在游戏上花费了那么多时间时in playing games, the only way it makes sense唯一让这件事情合理的理解方式就是:去想一想to even think about it is to talk about time在人类进化进程中at the magnitude of human evolution,我们所花费的时间有多少which is an extraordinary thing. But its also apt. Because it turns out这样去想是恰当的,因为你会发现that by spending all this time playing games,通过花费大量的时间去玩游戏were actually changing what we我们能改变我们做人的能力are capable of as human beings. We are evolving to be a more collaborative and hearty species. This is true. I believe this. So, consider this really interesting statistic;来看一个有趣的调查it was recently published by a researcher at Carnegie Mellon University:这份调查结果是由一位来自卡内基梅隆大学的研究者发布的The average young person today在一个玩游戏氛围很强的国家,当今的年轻人in a country with a strong gamer culture在一个玩游戏氛围很强的国家,当今的年轻人will have spent 10,000 hours playing online games在其21岁前,平均每人by the age of 21. Now 10,000 hours is a really现在,一万小时是一个很有趣的数值interesting number for two reasons. First of all, for children in the ed States首先,美国的儿童10,080 hours is the exact amount of time从五年级到高中毕业you will spend in school所需要的时间from fifth grade to high school graduation就是10080个小时if you have perfect attendance.当然你得表现良好(按时上课,出勤)So, we have an entire我们就有了一份并行跟踪教育的数据,parallel track of education going on它显示:where young people are learning as much about年轻人做一个好的游戏玩家所花费的时间what it takes to be a good gamer与他们在学校里面学习知识as they are learning about everything else in school. And some of you have probably 你们当中的有些人肯定读过Malcolm Gladwells new book ;Outliers.;MalcomGladwell的新书《局外人》So, you would have heard of his theory of success,因此你们对作者关于成功理论的见解也就不是那么陌生了the 10,000 hour theory of success. Its based on this great cognitive science research这个法则是基于认知科学研究的that if we can master 10,000 hours如果我们在21岁前能花费10000小时of effortful study at anything专心努力的学习或者是做一些其他的事情,by the age of 21, we will be virtuosos at it. We will be as good at whatever we do我们将在我们所做的任何事情上as the greatest people in the world. And so, now what were looking at现在,我们所关注的就是is an entire generation of young people擅长游戏的who are virtuoso gamers. So, the big question is,最大的问题就是;What exactly are gamers getting so good at?;“这些游戏玩家擅长于做些什么?”Because if we could figure that out,如果我们能给出we would have a virtually unprecedented我们将会发掘出一个human resource on our hands. This is how many people we now have in the world他们就是我们现在所拥有的那些who spend at least an hour a day playing online games. These are our virtuoso gamers,他们都是技艺精湛的游戏高手500 million people who are extraordinarily good at something.5亿擅长于某些事情的人And in the next decade在接下来的十年里were going to have another billion gamers又会有10亿多擅长于who are extraordinarily good at whatever that is. If you dont know it aly, this is coming. The game industry is developing consoles游戏产业一直在不停的发展that are low energy and that work with the wireless phone networks现如今,它的低能耗,instead of broadband Internet以及从宽带互联网到无线手机网络的变革so that gamers all over the world,让全球的游戏玩家,particularly in India, China, Brazil, can get online. They expect one billion more gamers in the next decade. It will bring us up to 1.5 billion gamers. So, Ive started to think about what these games因此,我早早的开始了思考,are making us virtuosos at. Here are the four things I came up with. The first is urgent optimism. OK, think of this as extreme self-motivation. Urgent optimism is the desire to act immediately急切的乐观精神是to tackle an obstacle,结合着combined with the belief自己必胜信念that we have a reasonable hope of success. Gamers always believe that an epic win is possible,游戏玩家始终相信and that it is always worth trying, and trying now.

Now, think how much progress weve aly made. When we first started, people everywhere asked the same questions.当我们刚刚起步时,到处有人问我一个同样的问题:“Could a woman really serve as commander-in-clief?”“女人真的能够领导国家吗?”Well, I think we answered that one. Could an African-American really be our president? And Senator Obama has answered that one.“黑人可以成为美国总统吗?” Together, Senator Obama and I achieved milestones essential to our progress as a nation, part of our perpetual duty to form a more perfect union. Now, on a personal note, when I was asked what it means to be a woman running for president, I always gave the same answer, that I was proud to be running as a woman, but I was running because I thought Id be the best president. But--but I am a woman and, like millions of women, I know there are still barriers and biases out there, often unconscious. I want to build an America that respects and embraces the potential of every last one of us. 201411/340439

I took another really important course called gaming theory while I was here. Gaming theory to me was fascinating because, with all due respect to my very erudite teachers Jake Jacoby took that course. Its a great course, but to me what gaming theory was an attempt by scientists to explain irrational decision making and irrational framework. Not all decisions are rational; not all decisions are scientifically based. Many people in business are overcome at times by their fears, their resentments, their rivalries, their agendas. It is part of life and business is a collection of people working together. I started out as a secretary. I was a medieval history major and philosophy major at Stanford University; it was really interesting but it would not pay the bills. I went on to law school, and discovered very quickly that I hated law school. So I quit. And then I had to pay the bills. And I took the only job that I knew I could do that would pay my bills and that was to be a secretary. Actually, secretary is big glorified, I was a receptionist, I sat in front of the building I typed and I answered the phones. That was my job. I thought while I was a secretary that the people in the mail room must be fundamentally different from the people in the board-mom. In what I have learned, in the course of my life, and my career and what this book is all about is that people are people wherever you find them. 201408/317361They have nothing to compare it to. When these villagers claimed their freedom,如果这些人要为自己争取自由,the slaveholders burned down all of their houses. I mean, these people had nothing,这些人一无所有,and they were so petrified, they wanted to give up,他们吓坏了,他们想要放弃,but the woman in the center rallied for them to persevere,但是照片中间这位女士团结众人坚持到底,and abolitionists on the ground helped them get a quarry lease of their own,在当地的废奴主义者帮助他们争取采石场的租约,so that now they do the same back-breaking work,这样,他们继续干着同样的重活,but they do it for themselves, and they get paid for it,但现在是为自己而干,能拿到酬劳,and they do it in freedom. Sex trafficking is what we often think of when we hear the word slavery,非法性交易是我们在听到奴役时最常联想到的and because of this worldwide awareness,因为全球皆知,I was warned that it would be difficult for me to work safely within this particular industry. In Kathmandu, I was escorted by women who had previously been sex slaves themselves. They ushered me down a narrow set of stairs that led to this dirty, dimly fluorescent lit basement. This wasnt a brothel, perse. It was more like a restaurant. Cabin restaurants, as theyre known in the trade,包厢餐厅在业内被人熟知,are venues for forced prostitution. Each has small, private rooms, where the slaves,一个个小隔间里,性奴们,women, along with young girls and boys,女人和小孩,some as young as seven years old,有些只有七岁大,are forced to entertain the clients,被迫取悦客户,encouraging them to buy more food and alcohol. Each cubicle is dark and dingy,每个小隔间都很暗很脏,identified with a painted number on the wall,墙上画着号码,and partitioned by plywood and a curtain. The workers here often endure tragic sexual abuse at the hands of their customers. 201510/402524Actually I saw something in--in the paper last week about Kermit the Frog giving a commencement address somewhere. One of the studens was complaining, ;I worked my ass off for four years to be addressed by a sock?; You have worked your ass off for this. For four years youve been buying, trading, and selling everything youve got in this marketplace of ideas. The intellectual hustle. Your pockets are full, even if your parents are empty, and--and now youve got to figure out what to spend it on. Well, the going rate for change is not cheap. Big ideas are expensive. The Universit has had its share of big ideas. Benjamin Franklin had a few. So did Justice Brennen and in my opinion so does Judith Rodin. What a gorgeous girl. They all know--They all knew that if youre gonna be good at your word, if youre gonna live up to your ideals and your education, its gonna cost you. So my question I suppose is: Whats the big idea? Whats your big idea? What are you willing to spend your moral capital, your intellectual capital, your cashes, your sweat equity in pursing outside of the walls of the University of Pennsylvania? Theres a really great--truly great Irish poet, his name is Brendan Kennelly, and he has this epic poem called the Book of Judas, and theres a line in that poem that never leaves my mind. It says:;If you want to serve the age, betray it.; What does that mean to betray the age? /201312/267886

Let us not wallow in the valley of despair. I say to you today, my friends, so even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream. I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up, live up to the true meaning of its creed: ;We hold these truths to be self-evident; that all men are created equal.;我梦想有一天,这个国家会站立起来,真正实现其信条的真谛:“我们认为这些真理是不言而喻的;人人生而平等。”I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave-owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood. I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi, a state sweltering with the heat of injustice, sweltering with the heat of oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice. I have a dream that my four children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color if their skin but by the content of their character. I have a dream today. /201307/248248
